Salomon Men's Quest 4D GTX Fast Light Backpacking Boot Review

After MONTHS of trying on at least a hundred pairs of hiking boots at places like REI, Dicks, Ramseys, etc., These were recommended to me by a sales rep who said, just try them on, then look at the price. Immediately after slipping them on i commented that they felt like ski boots. I was being a little indignant because I thought I had explained to the guy that i was looking for lightweight. He just nodded and told me that Salomon is a leading ski boot manufacturer, and apparently these boots were directly inspired by much of that same technology. I laced them up and took a few laps around the store, only to return to the shoe section knowing I had found a winner. It only takes a day for these boots to mold incredibly to your feet and make you feel like you're walking around on bubble wrap. Let me go into some detail:
First of all, when buying boots, know your weaknesses! If you have the slightest tendency to go over on your ankles, do NOT buy boots that save weight by not riding up your ankles. Also, do not buy boots that you can even remotely bend in half when you grip the heel and the toe. You want your boot to feel like the sole is made of metal and won't compromise its shape. Next weakness to be aware of is the shape of your foot. You may not know it, but your feet might naturally put you at a disadvantage for long distance hiking just because of your genetics. If you have flat feet or wide feet, don't despair! I have just about the most hobbit-ish feet you could have, extra wide and flatter than unleavened bread. All of that was no problem for this particular boot. the molding and shaping of the boot to your personal attributes over the first intense day of wearing them is just flabbergasting. I was so happy that i wasn't going to end up back in the store with a return.
Of course, not every outstanding boot is perfect for everyone. After talking with another sales rep at that store, he said he had desperately wanted this pair of boots but tried them on only to realize the toe box (area around the toes that is harder and does not mold or change shape) was too small for his feet. Honestly, I can't imagine what that guy's feet must look like, because my toes are incredibly wide and i still have a little room to breath down there.
Now on to the trail-tested aspects of the boots. These came with me for a 350 mile trek down the long green tunnel (The Appalachian Trail). Let me just say this first, because I happen to find this to be the most impressive aspect of their field qualities: At the end of 12, 13, 15 mile days, a hiker usually wastes no time in removing his boots (making all sorts of guttural noises in the process) and airing out his feet by putting on camp shoes or sandals for the minor, around-the-campsite/shelter type of work. After the first few days (during the first few days of a long distance hike no hiker can resist trying out all of his gear no matter how useless it may prove to be) I found that I didn't even take these boots off until it was time to go to sleep. that was the end of my camp shoes! They were so comfortably molded to my feet, and felt like such an extension of my legs, that I didn't even want to remove them. And i didn't need to! Airing out your feet is not a crucial, time-sensitive function like with most boots. With others, if you fail to do this, you could miss an entire day on the trail with blisters or fungus or worse (granted a LOT of that depends on your socks). These boots have the uncanny ability to breathe. They are also waterproof. and no, I don't mean "waterproof" in the lame sense that most manufacturers get away with these days. today, waterproof has too often come to mean, "you can spill water on them and it will bead-up." Duh. Anybody can make their boots, pack, clothes or any gear do that by spraying some chemicals on them. These boots will remain perfectly dry should you dunk them in water, as long as the water doesn't spill over the top and down into your socks, obviously. if you want to do that, get waders.
About weight: These will appear to be a little heavy when you have them in your hands. not so on day-two or three of them being on your feet. Keep that in mind. they seem to magically lighten up. But as a rule of thumb keep this in mind: one pound of footwear is roughly equal to six pounds of gear in your pack. that being said these should feel like about 12 pounds of gear, but they DO NOT!
Finally, another trail-tested piece of genius from these boots is the fluid and reliable lacing system. I know it sounds like it should go without saying, but some boots just can't get this right. You want your laces to have two districts, basically, operating independently of one another. There's the south district, the area near your toes that tightens the boot around your feet (this district should be laced loosely when going downhill, and tightly when going uphill) - and the other district ties your ankles (and should be tighter when going downhill to support your ankles... which are the most important part of a hiker's feet i think.) These boots make that truly possible and do not require 15 minutes and a water break just to re-lace.
Bottom line: notice that these boots are not actually classified as hiking boots by the manufacturer, but mountaineering boots. take that for what it is supposed to mean. these are extremely serious professional boots. the price is completely fair for what they can achieve. Though that's easy for me to say because i got them on sale at $160!
