Louis Garneau 2011/12 Tri Speed Triathlon Cycling Shoes - 1487066-001 Review

First off, this is my first pair of triathlon shoes. I've owned a fair number of bike shoes, but since I've started to get into doing triathlons, I decided to pick these up to speed up transitions.
First thing first, if you buy shoes, and they don't fit then you'll not likely be pleased with them. I wear 11.5 US shoes, so naturally I ordered these in size 45. They fit, but not well. If anything they're a bit large. The toe box is wide enough not to crush the toes, and the length seems right, but the large velocro strap used to secure the shoe is too long. When the strap is tightened around the foot, the strap extends beyond the shoe. This wouldn't be a problem with normal road shoes as the strap would be facing away from the crank arm, however since these are Tri shoes, the strap hits the crankarm on every rotation. Annoying to say the least. I will note that I've had this problem with other shoes, so take this critique with a grain of salt... I may just have odd shaped feet.
Construction seems generally good. They're stiff, light and seem to have enough ventilation. The second sole insert is a great idea for different weather conditions. The hole patterns make them compatable with SPD, SPD-SL (3 hole/look style), and just about every pedal system out there which is a definite plus. When they arrived there was some plastic (looked like hot glue) covering one of the vents on the bottom of the shoe... no big deal, but not exactly what one would like to find. My only other complaint is that the shoes arrived with the velcro straps already strapped down. This caused the strap to form a solid crease that makes it difficult to set the strap at the desired length.
Overall I am content with my purchase of these shoes, but not elated. For the price, I was hoping for more, but seem to have gotten what I paid for.
