Northwave 2011 Rebel SBS Mountain Biking Shoes - 80102001 Review

I bought a 2nd pair of these after purchasing the red/blk/wht model. Northwave quality and build is very close to SIDI. The price allowed me to overlook minor differences.
My last pair of SIDI lasted about 4 years before falling apart. The buckle rachet was worn out and the cleats were gone. Also the inside sole was about gone. Although I could have ordered and changed some of these parts it would have cost too much. Also, the leather was so worn from sweat and water it just didnt make sense to replace these parts.
When I looked at the new model of Sidi they were around $289 USD.
Comparing the Northwave 2011 SBS Rebel was comparable except for the cleat replacement. If these Northwaves get 4 years of use, then it was a real deal. After a month of riding the shoes have broken in around the ankle and are comfortable. The sole is very stiff and feels like I have more pedal power.
Pros: The buckle system is functional and rugged like SIDI's. Its easy to adjust the mechanical rachet and release. The grey button allows full release for entry and exit. The firmness of the sole is great. I live in Southern California and the vented toe really works. I have had no problem hitting the toe or damaging the screen. I have had to hike a bike up rocky croppings.
Cons: The Northwaves are a little wider than SIDI's. My foot is wider so the Northwaves worked fine for me but beware if you have a narrow or small foot. I fit into the 44.5 and have a 11 US, I'm 6ft and 190 lbs. If you live in wet or cold enviroments the vented toe might not be for you. Also, if you ride in roots like the northwest you might poke the front vents. I have had more problem with sticks or roots than rocks. The sole cleats do not detach like SIDI's so you cannot replace.
Overall, they were a no brainer for me and ordering a 2nd pair will save me money in the future. The price for this style of MTB shoes are going higher. And the lower model shoes do not have the buckles or rachets...and they look cheap.
