Bont A-One Cycling Shoe - Men's Review

When you buy something that says "handmade" on it you would think it was better quality than something made by a machine. Unfortunately, I've found that the quality of my A-ones is below even the base level Performance brand shoes that I owned before. Within a month the different layers of leather and plastic began to peel in places. Where the supple kangaroo leather (that means it gets creases quickly) started to peel from the washtub carbon soles.Ironically, the plastic piece on the heel that says "Bont, handmade" was one of the first places for the glue to fail. The Velcro is also starting to wear out and curl at the ends of the straps.
Another issue arose when I went to switch out cleats recently. As they claim, they have an extremely thin carbon sole. So to attach the cleat they simply have a minimalist set of grommets that go through the carbon from the inside. They have threads on the inside, and are only held in by the pulling on the bolt from the opposite side and a few metal points that dig into the inside of the sole. What happened to me is that a few of these began to spin, and once it began there was no way to stop it. Even trying to hold the inside still with pliers proved useless in getting the bolts tight enough.
All of this might be excusable if they offered unparalleled comfort and ride quality, but while they are extremely stiff, they are also hard to mold (I thought that was one of the biggest reasons to buy them in the first place). Even after raising the oven temperature slightly above the recommended temperature in an attempt to make them soft enough to mold I couldn't make any significant changes to their shape. Of course every pair of feet is different, but for me they weren't even comfortable out of the box, so molding was my last-ditch effort to make them work.
All in all they've been less than desirable for something that costs so much more than the competitors.
